Drinking Water Quality Management System
In order to meet the requirements of Justice O'Connor's report, the Ministry of the Environment has developed the Drinking Water Municipal Licensing Program.
Under this program each Municipality must develop and implement a Quality Management System (QMS). A QMS can be expressed as the organizational structure, procedures, processes and resources needed to implement quality management and services for our water systems.
Below you will find the Township of Georgian Bluffs QMS with the Elements 1-21. The General public can view the Township's QMS in it's entirety located at the municipal office
Waste Water Protection
The Township provides waste water protection through its municipal sewage lagoon located on Sideroad 3 in the former Derby. Currently the lagoon is being upgraded to include an Anaerobic Bio-digester.
The sewage treatment plant at Cobble Beach has been constructed primarily to service that community. Current agreements provide for the transfer of the treatment facility to the Township. The Township bills customers of the sewage facility on behalf of Cobble Beach. Approval from the Township is required to connect to this sewage system. The facility is currently operated by Veolia Water Solutions and Technology on behalf of Cobble Beach.
Private sewage disposal systems are currently approved by the Grey Bruce Owen Sound Health Unit
Stewardship Program
The Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program - Early Actions Funding is available for 2008-2009. If you are a landowner whose property is within or extends into the 2-year time-of-travel around a municipal well, or the IPZ-1 (intake protection zone one) around a municipal surface water intake, you may be eligible for funding. Funding on upgrading septic systems or wells is up to 80% of the cost depending on the project. Visit www.waterprotection.ca to review maps of eligible areas or call 1-877-470-3001 and ask for Steacy or Karen to learn more and determine if you are eligible.
The actions taken on your property can benefit you and protect your municipal supply of drinking water.
All residents can become water stewards by conserving water around the home and yard, collecting rain water for yard use, maintaining septic systems and having well water sampled three times per year for free through the health unit if you have a private well. Protecting water supplies by keeping hazardous household chemicals and fuels out of drains and storm sewers are also good ways to keep water clean and reduce the amount of treatment.
Working together we can all protect drinking water sources for today and tomorrow!
